For the sixth time in three years an eagle was struck fatally by a plane at Sanford Airport last week. An allegiant air flight collided with the bird on Monday. There were one hundred and thirty eight passengers on board the plane.

The plane was just taking off destined for Allentown in Pennsylvania.  The eagle was struck by the angle of attack indicator on the plane. The plane was grounded at Sanford for safety reasons as the plane was inspected.

Passengers spoke of being mildly panicked by the ordeal with some children in particular becoming very agitated. The pilot announced that the plane had collided with a bird and there was nothing to worry about.

The eagle weighed twenty pounds and remained in one piece despite the intensity of the collision. Passengers eventually took off for Pennsylvania four hours later on a different plane.

It is not considered unusual for a plane to hit a bird with over seven thousand collisions reported in the US last year however eagle collisions are quite rare with just twenty reported in the last year.

Officials at Sanford Airport have long been aware of the threat posed to eagles and have taken measures over the years to insure less problems including destroying eagle nests however the eagles that already reside there tend to stay.

Birds have become such a problem on Sanford Airport runways that it is now a full time job keeping them away. Brad Welborn is the wildlife expert at Sanford Airport and has been given the task.

Welborn stated that there are no natural predators within the airport. He has an assortment of tools which he uses to control the birds including paintball guns, flares and fireworks and on occasion even a shotgun.

Protected species such as the bald eagle are of course treated with a little more TLC. There are many bald eagles within the surrounding regions of Sanford Airport. There are collisions between birds and planes up to twenty or thirty times a year at Sanford. They normally involve small birds.

Development in areas surrounding Sanford has meant many birds have to leave their habitats and find somewhere new.

The prime minister of New Zealand has become involved in a dispute with car hire company - New Zealand Car Rental Specialists. The PM was reportably furious with the actions of the company.

Two men lost their lives after being crushed by tones of falling ice. 24 year old Ashish Miranda and 22 year old Akshay Miranda were killed as they innocently posed for photos at Fox Glacier on the South Island on Thursday 8th January.

New Zealand Car Rental Specialists demanded $1950 NZ Dollars from the family in order to tow the rental car back to Wellington as well as replace the lost car keys which were in Akshay’s pocket. Akshay’s body has yet to be recovered.

Public outcry from both New Zealand and Australia eventually forced the car hire company to back down. John Key (NZ PM) stated that he believed the company should have shown more compassion for the family. He went on to say that business’s need to look at the whole picture and not just stick to legalities. He called the actions of the company “crass” and “truly bad business practice”.

An emergency landing was made by a small plane in Kennebunk last month. Staff at Sanford Airport were notified that the plane was in trouble when it was three miles from Sanford.

Due to engine failure the plane needed to make an emergency landing. Portland Airport could no longer make contact with the plane. The plane eventually landed safely in a field roughly one mile and a half from Sanford and three miles from Sanford Airport.

Neither of the two people on board the plane were injured. Tim Campbell and Bob Irving were then questioned and looked over by emergency personnel. Firemen were called from Sanford to the scene. Sherry Lord of Sanford Airport also attended the scene.

Irving spoke of hearing a loud bang before the cockpit was packed with smoke. The pilot decided that Sanford Airport was too far away to try land there. Irving has full faith in the abilities of his mentor Campbell to land the plane. He said the experience had not put him off flying.

Like almost all travel related industries, car hire has been hit by the current economic downturn.  Customers have spoken out complaining of higher rental car charges, getting cars with more mileage and having less staff on hand to help them.

Many major car hire companies have been forced to let staff go in the last year as well as having to close some pick up points. This has inconvenienced many regular customers who are now looking for new car hire companies to deal with.

• Avis cut two thousand, two hundred jobs last year (7% of their workforce)
• Hertz let go two thousand staff last year
• Hertz reported a ninety four percent drop in income last year
• Advantage Rent A Car filed for bankruptcy reorganization in December. Car hire is no longer offered at many of its forty eighty rental locations.
• Dollar Thrifty are reportably likely to file for protection from creditors in bankruptcy court

Experts however do not expect any of the major car hire companies to disappear. As long as they continue to trim staff and fleets they will survive. Due to a poor used car sales market, many companies are keeping cars on their fleet longer than usual.

It seems that cost comparison car hire sites are only going to grow in popularity as customers try to find the best value deal possible. Our cheap car hire Sanford Airport service sources rental cars from a wide variety of top car hire companies.
